The proposed restoration and revitalising of the Belper Mills complex in Derbyshire has moved a step closer following the submission of a planning application to Amber Valley Borough Council.

The plans to restore and enhance the area, located on the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, were showcased to the public at a consultation event in May, with the proposals subsequently available to view online. The response to the plans has been positive, and the submitted application has been informed by the feedback received by members of the public and community groups.

Our plans for the Belper Mills complex focus on maximising the site’s cultural heritage while increasing its attractiveness to visitors and creating new business opportunities to stimulate the local economy. The plans also emphasise the World Heritage status of the site, showcasing historic elements of the complex that are not currently being utilised to their full potential.

The plans include:

  • A proposal to convert the historic East Mill into 117 mixed-use apartments that combine a modern aesthetic with a respect for the building’s rich history.
  • Reconnecting the mill complex with the Grade II listed River Gardens.
  • Simplifying the unique architecture of Strutt House to create an eye-catching retail offer, modern office building or wedding venue.
  • Restoring the Engine House to its original, industrial appearance by stripping away walls and ceilings that were installed since it was originally constructed. The plans for the Engine House also involve the creation of an eye-catching frontage.
  • Working with present occupants and tenants to enable them to remain on site if so desired.
  • Guaranteeing the safety of the peregrine falcons that reside on the East Mill and providing better access for visitors to view the protected species.
