Croydon’s Leon House Scoops WhatHouse? Award

The 20-storey development was awarded a bronze commendation in the Best Renovation category at the prestigious WhatHouse? Awards

Leon House, an iconic apartment scheme in the heart of Croydon, has been recognised at the prestigious WhatHouse? Awards, having scooped a prize for the Best Renovation.

The 20-story development was awarded a bronze commendation for its sympathetic conversion from a 1960s modernist office block into 263 well designed, light-filled residences. Complete with coworking space, private dining room and sky garden, judges recognised that Leon House provided much more than just a home to its residents.

Leon House – which sits within our asset management portfolio – was introduced to the London property market in September 2018, following a £50m transformation in conjunction with architects, ColladoCollins.

Praising the building’s thoughtfully planned transformation into a design-centric, residential apartment scheme, judges were particularly impressed with the extent to which Leon House celebrates its original design. Judges noted that, unlike many of the surrounding buildings that have been hidden under external cladding, Leon House pays homage to the integrity of the building’s modernist roots and utilises key features, including the original floor-to-ceiling windows.

Judges also commended the approach to repairs, which had only been made where necessary in order to carefully preserve the intricate artwork by renowned post-war sculptor and artist, William Mitchell. The artwork was uncovered when work began on the refurbishment, having been hidden for over a decade. It can now be seen once again on each of the 20 floors and throughout the entire stairwell.

Naturally, we’re delighted that Leon House has been recognised and this award is a testament to our commitment to bringing the former office block back into productive use in the best possible fashion. We have always known that Leon House was something special, as too does its growing community who have breathed new life into its fabric.

Leon House is located on 233 High Street, Croydon, CR0 1FW, with one and two bedrooms available priced from £346,750. Visit www.leonhousecroydon.co.uk to book a viewing.
